The Bhagavad Gita is a Hindu scripture that forms part of the epic Mahabharata. It is a dialogue between Prince Arjuna and his charioteer Krishna, who is an avatar of Vishnu. The conversation takes place on the eve of the Kurukshetra War between the Pandavas and the Kauravas. Arjuna is filled with doubt and despair about the impending war, as he sees many of his enemies are his own relatives, friends, and teachers. Krishna advises Arjuna on various aspects of dharma, including the nature of existence, the soul, and the importance of fulfilling one's duties. The Gita explores themes such as the nature of the self, the role of duty, and the path to spiritual liberation through the concepts of jnana, bhakti, karma, and raja yogas.
